How To Measure For Storm Windows

Storm Window Measuring Guideline

Storm window orders are ALWAYS taken by the rough opening size of the of the window.

Before measuring you will need to determine if your window is going to mount into the opening on the blindstop or overlap the opening and mount to the surrounding trim. The following two methods are for both double-hung and picture window storm windows.

Blindstop Windows

  • WIDTH - Measure the opening of the window at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the SMALLEST of the three measurements
  • HEIGHT - Measure from the sill to the top of the opening, at the extreme left and right sides of the opening. Use the SHORTEST of these measurements.

Rodenhouse will then manufacture your window an 1/8" smaller in width to fit into the opening on to the blindstop. We will include our adjustable bottom expander which will adjust up and down approximately 1/8".

    Overlap Windows

  • WIDTH - Measure the opening of the window at the top, middle, and bottom. Use the SMALLEST of the three measurements
  • HEIGHT - Measure from the sill to the top of the opening, at the extreme left and right sides of the opening. Use the SHORTEST of these measurements.

Rodenhouse will then manufacture your window 1 1/4" larger in width to overlap the opening (5/8" on both sides). We will also add 5/8" to the opening in height (for the top only) and include our adjustable bottom expander which will adjust up and down approximately 1/8".
